DES MOINES, Iowa — The Southeast Polk and Ankeny Centennial unified basketball teams took the floor during halftime of the Class 2A state semifinal game on Friday morning at the IGHSAU state basketball tournament.
Southeast Polk recently started their very first unified team, giving students with intellectual and physical disabilities a chance to enjoy playing sports with their grade level peers.
"With the unified sports team, it gets students with intellectual and physical disabilities together with the gen-ed students, and they get to play together and develop relationships and friendships and get to play a sport that they don't usually get to," said Kaeli Humphrey, SE Polk special education teacher.
The teams will play again on March 6 during halftime of a game at the IHSAA state basketball tournament as well.
