70-year-old Carlisle man killed in Friday crash, Des Moines police say

This is Des Moines' 14th traffic-related fatality of 2023.

DES MOINES, Iowa — One person is dead following a single-vehicle crash Friday night, Des Moines police said in a press release.

Police responded to a report of a crash on Euclid Avenue at around 10:15 p.m. Friday.

When they arrived, first responders found a 70-year-old driver in critical condition. Medics transported the driver to a local hospital, where he later died.

He has since been identified as Karl Louis Dartez.

Preliminary investigations indicate the man was driving west on Euclid Avenue when the car entered the eastbound lanes before leaving the road.

The car struck "multiple fixed objects", such as concrete barriers and a tree, before traveling down an embankment and coming to rest.

This is Des Moines' 14th traffic-related fatality of 2023.
