Grinnell businesses begin clean-up process following Sunday storm

Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for several counties following the storm, including Benton, Iowa, Jasper, Muscatine and Poweshiek counties.

GRINNELL, Iowa — Severe storms rolled across central Iowa Sunday evening. While there wasn't much damage in Des Moines, Grinnell wasn't as lucky.

Josh Lacaeyse, owner of Lacaeyse Trailer Sales, said his lot was pelted with softball-size hail. He described the moments leading up to one of his trailers blowing away in the wind.

"We were just coming up the road. And it started out as small hail, you know, next thing we know it was softball-size," Lacaeyse said. "And we, like I said before, we were trying to get to the underpass. And as soon as we come by here, trailers, just the wind picked up. I don't know if it was a tornado or what it was, but the way everything was intertwined on top of each other."

Meanwhile at the Quality Inn & Suites, broken glass and damaged siding covered the lot.

The owner said he has to move 21 guest this month that had booked damaged rooms before the storm.

Thankfully, no one was hurt at the hotel or Lacaeyse Trailer Sales.

Grinnell wasn't the only place that received severe weather. In Collins, the storm downed power lines along Highway 65, leading crews to block it off entirely.

Crews worked overnight into this afternoon, trying to get new poles in the ground on either side of the highway.

Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for several counties following the storm, including Benton, Iowa, Jasper, Muscatine and Poweshiek counties.
