Des Moines-based convenience store chain Kum & Go expanding to Utah

Kum & Go currently has 400 stores across 11 states.

DES MOINES, Iowa — One of the Midwest's favorite gas stations is heading west.

Convenience store chain Kum & Go announced it will open a series of stores around Salt Lake City, Utah in 2022. Currently, Kum & Go has 400 stores spread across 11 different states.

“We are excited to bring Kum & Go’s unique brand of fun, flavor and convenience to Utah,” said Kum & Go CEO Tanner Krause. “I love the state and the energy in a city like Salt Lake is hard to beat. I’m looking forward to bringing a new type of convenience – along with some breakfast pizza – to Utah.”

According to Senior Vice President of Store Development Niki Mason, this is the first new state Kum & Go will be entering in over 10 years, but this isn't the only expansion to look forward to.

“We plan for an initial rollout of more than 30 stores in the next five years and see plenty of opportunity for growth beyond," Mason said.

Kum & Go's Twitter account also announced the news, highlighting tweets from Utahns begging for the convenience store to expand to the state.

The first Kum & Go was established in Hampton, Iowa in 1959.

Now, the chain boasts 5,000 employees in its 400 stores across Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming.
