DES MOINES, Iowa — Community members gathered to honor, remember and grieve at the Black Children's Memorial in Des Moines on Saturday afternoon.
The candlelight vigil hosted by the Des Moines Black Liberation Movement, which ran from noon to 1 p.m. at 1601 6th Avenue in Des Moines, honored the lives lost in Sudan, Congo, Ethiopia and Palestine. Around two dozen people attended, calling for freedom and peace around the world.
"There are beautiful people in the future. There is safety in the future. There are beautiful people in the future. There is liberation in the future. There are beautiful people in the future," attendees chanted.
Des Moines BLM asked attendees to bring flags, flowers, stuffed animals and candles for the altar building ceremony.
Organizers said the altar will stay up at that location for the foreseeable future, and a similar event will happen next year.
