'Heart of hospitality': Friday night event to showcase Japanese culture

The Japan America Society of Iowa (JASI) is hosting its "Discover Sake Pairing" event Friday evening at Allora Cafe.

DES MOINES, Iowa — You don't have to go far this weekend to get a true experience of Japanese culture.

The Japan America Society of Iowa (JASI) is hosting its "Discover Sake Pairing" event Friday evening at Allora Cafe at the Krause Gateway Center in downtown Des Moines.

The nonprofit's executive director, Yoko Tanaka, said the event features a three-course meal paired with different sakes, music, and different cultural experiences for guests.

Different entertainment includes an origami craft table, a Furoshiki workshop to learn the art of Japanese fabric wrapping and pottery demonstrations featuring sake carafes and cups. There will also be a silent auction.

The night is all about learning and being together.

"Whatever we do, we do not do it just for the sake of doing it. We do it to welcome and pay respect to our guests and friends and we would like to showcase that heart of hospitality, called 'omotenashi' in this event," said Tanaka.

The event is Friday night from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are still available here.
