Driver arrested for hitting patrol cars, fleeing scene, Iowa State Patrol says

An Iowa driver is in custody after hitting two patrol cars, leaving the scene and "revving" their engine until a vehicle fire began.

LAURENS, Iowa — An Iowa driver is in custody after hitting two patrol cars, leaving the scene and "revving" their engine on stop sticks, causing a vehicle fire.

In a Saturday morning Facebook post, Iowa State Patrol said a driver hit an ISP patrol car and a Laurens Police Department vehicle while the agencies were responding to an unrelated single-vehicle fatality crash.

The driver then left the scene and headed toward Highway 10, where the Pocahontas Police Department was able to put out stop sticks in the road. The driver then revved their engine while stuck in the stop sticks, causing a vehicle fire.

The driver faces the following charges:

  • Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident
  • Eluding (2nd offense)
  • Reckless driving
  • Driving while suspended
  • No SR22
  • No proof of insurance

At this time, the Iowa State Patrol has not specified where or when the crash and chase happened.

Multiple agencies, including the Havelock Fire Department and Laurens Ambulance Service, helped respond to the accident and subsequent fire.
