Des Moines police identify man who died in Wednesday morning shooting

Evidence indicates there was an "exchange of gunfire" in a hotel room that led to Propps' death and the other man's injuries, according to a press release.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police have identified a man who died following a shooting Wednesday morning.

Police responded to a report of a shooting in the Ramada by Wyndham near the Des Moines International Airport around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.

When they arrived, first responders found two men with gunshot wounds in a hotel room. One of the men, 30-year-old Sayvon Propps of Des Moines, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second man, a 31-year-old Des Moines resident, was transported to a local hospital. He remains hospitalized in "critical condition" as of 2 p.m. Thursday.

Evidence indicates there was an "exchange of gunfire" in a hotel room that led to Propps' death and the other man's injuries, according to a press release. It is currently unclear if the gunshots came from Propps and the other man, or if other people were present at the scene.

"It's a little troubling that we're seeing this in the succession that we have, so our officers are going to continue to do their work on the streets, and our detectives are going to continue to work on these cases," Sgt. Paul Parizek told Local 5 on Wednesday.

This is Des Moines' second homicide of 2024. Officers are also still investigating a Tuesday morning shooting that left one man hospitalized.

"We're actually in a better spot than we were last year, it's too bad right now that there are a couple families that are suffering," Parizek added.
