Just after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office responded to the 9800 block of Haxybylane Road in rural La Motte for a report of an unresponsive person. Investigators found 32-year-old Tana Poppe dead at the scene.

Police Pursuit and Standoff in Wisconsin

According to a Thursday press conference, Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett said that around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dane County authorities learned that the aforementioned 5-month-old child had been dropped off unharmed at a residence in Dunn, Wisconsin, by the 13-year-old girl and a man identified as 38-year-old Alexander Grunke. Grunke was identified as the person of interest in Poppe's death.

A police pursuit of Grunke and the teenager driving in a black Ford Escape began shortly afterward. Barrett said that Grunke and the teenager shot at sheriff's deputies with a rifle and handgun during the pursuit. Authorities eventually disabled the vehicle using road spikes in the town of Albion, Wisconsin, at which point both suspects fled the vehicle while carrying firearms.

According to Barrett, the girl fled into a wooded area and was later found unresponsive before dying of unknown causes. Authorities said there were no visual signs of injury on the girl. An autopsy to determine the cause of her death is set to be performed.

After fleeing the disabled vehicle, Grunke entered an Albion home with a woman and two children inside and barricaded himself. Sheriff's deputies entered the house and evacuated the family while Grunke was inside the basement.

Authorities said Grunke fired shots while inside the house. After several hours of attempting to contact Grunke, the Sheriff's Office used a robot to enter the residence and found Grunke dead of an apparent suicide.

Barrett said that no sheriff's deputies were struck in the incident, nor did they fire their weapons.
