WEST DES MOINES – Iowa legendary wrestling coach Dan Gable is out with a new book, and he stopped by Local 5 to talk about it Tuesday afternoon.
It’s called “A Wrestling Life,” and it talks about life lessons the Olympic champion has learned on and off the mat.
“There’s more history in this book,” said Gable. “And I know some people don’t like history because you read about how people did and their names but I put my attitude in that framework of history so it’s entertaining as well. I’m not going to do anything without putting entertainment into it as well and that’s the way my athletes were they were going to be entertaining and that’s why they were tough to beat.”
Our crew also asked Gable about his opinion of President Donald Trump. We had asked him thoughts on Trump during the primary election last year. He said he wouldn’t give Trump his endorsement right now.
“Oh, no, you can’t do it,” said Gable. “A lot of people didn’t think he’d be a good coach. You gotta prove some things, you gotta get some things done. Then, when you get some accomplishments you can decide to sit back, maybe retire. Or if you start getting a lot of good things happening then you can start accepting some praise. We gotta see some really good things happening. It’s beyond talk its actual accomplishment and those may come but its scary because there sa lot of things going on in the world that have made for a division.”
Gable talked about his book at an event in Clive Tuesday night.
