AMES – It’s no secret that ISU linebacker Joel Lanning was an integral part to Iowa State’s success this season.

Local 5’s Sports Director Jon Schaeffer sat down with Lanning before the Memphis game to see how it all happened.

“Just knowing the game like I do now in high school you’re like man there’s a lot of things going on play calls are long things like that. You get here and it’s the same thing like that but then that’s all you do so you just learn it like the back of your hand,” said Lanning.

Lanning took in as much as he could before his first start came. That’s just one of the many memories that stand out to Lanning who will suit up one last time in the cardinal and gold when Iowa State takes on Memphis in the Liberty Bowl.

Lanning looks back on some of his bigger wins over his four years at ISU.

“When we went into Iowa City and beat Iowa that was a big win,” said Lanning. “There’s like this year beating number three Oklahoma which is huge. Beating TCU here. I got a lot of great memories.”

As for what Lanning would tell his 12-year-old self if he could go back in time?

“Stick to playing linebacker, you got a good chance at it and just keep working hard,” said Lanning.
