Des Moines police: Man in 'critical condition' after being rescued from fire

Police and fire personnel continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

DES MOINES, Iowa — One person is hospitalized following an early morning fire at a Des Moines apartment building, police said in a press release.

Des Moines police and fire department personnel responded to reports of smoke in the halls of an apartment building on Creston Avenue at approximately 12:35 a.m. Sunday.

When they arrived, first responders found heavy smoke in the building. A tenant told fire crews the source of the smoke was a first floor apartment.

Firefighters were able to evacuate the resident of that apartment, a 65-year-old man, via a bedroom window. The fire was successfully extinguished by fire crews.

Police say the 65-year-old man is currently hospitalized in "critical condition". A pet was also transported to an emergency veterinary clinic for care.

Polk County Emergency Management is assisting several residents who have been displaced due to fire damage.

Police and fire personnel continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
