DES MOINES, Iowa — One person is dead following an overnight crash involving a car and a motorcycle, Des Moines police said in a press release.

Officers responded to a report of a crash with injury at E. 13th Street and E. Grand Avenue at around 12:25 a.m. Saturday.

When they arrived, first responders found a car and a motorcycle had collided in the intersection.

A male motorcyclist, 22-year-old Spencer Rush of Des Moines, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

A preliminary investigation indicates Rush was driving west on E. Grand Avenue when a driver was attempting a left turn from eastbound E. Grand Avenue to northbound E. 13th Street.

Police believe excessive speed and failure to yield could have contributed to the crash.

No other injuries were reported. The driver of the car has been identified only as a 35-year-old Des Moines man.

This is Des Moines' third traffic-related fatality crash of 2024, and the second involving a motorcycle.
