Des Moines Police Chief Dana Wingert retiring in 'next few months', city confirms

Dana Wingert has been Des Moines' police chief for nearly a decade.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The city of Des Moines says Police Chief Dana Wingert will retire in "the next few months".

“We will be sad to see Chief Wingert retire, but will take advantage of the next few months to celebrate his nearly decade long leadership. Chief Wingert has been a voice for pushing the Des Moines Police Department forward," the city told Local 5 over email.

City Manager Scott Sanders first shared the news of Wingert's upcoming departure with the Des Moines Register, just hours after Des Moines Mayor Connie Boesen confirmed news of Sanders' rescinded resignation.

Wingert has served the Des Moines police chief since 2015 and has worked in law enforcement for nearly three decades.

"He has helped shepherd the City through difficult times, while remaining a positive pillar of our community," the city's statement via email reads. "The City of Des Moines cannot thank Chief Wingert enough for his dedication to service and public safety. He will be greatly missed."

Sgt. Paul Parizek, DMPD Public Information Officer, referred Local 5 to the City Communications department for comment since the announcement was made by Sanders.

Wingert's exact retirement date has not yet been announced.
