DES MOINES — The Iowa Department of Corrections said an inmate in its custody died on New Year’s Day.
Leaders said Rick Bird died from natural causes at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Bird had been serving a life sentence for first-degree Murder in Union County. The IDOC said he was incarcerated on October 1997.
Bird was 72 years old.
