DES MOINES – Justices on Iowa’s Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the Iowa Department of Transportation doesn’t have the authority to regulate traffic cameras.

The ruling came after lawyers from the DOT and several Iowa cities argued in front of the justices over who has jurisdiction to put cameras on Iowa’s interstates and highways.

Cities of Des Moines, Muscatine, and Cedar Rapids sued the department. They wanted to keep their speed cameras in place on major interstates across Iowa.

It’s up to the cities now if they want to turn the cameras back on and begin ticketing drivers for going above the posted speed limit.
