Central Iowa wrestlers take home state titles at IHSAA tournament

More than 20 local wrestlers competed for a state championship on Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The 2024 IHSAA boys state wrestling tournament is taking place at Wells Fargo Arena from Feb. 14-17. 

With more than 20 local wrestlers competing in the tournament, a total of 13 brought home big wins for central Iowa schools. The championship bouts began at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17.

Below are the winners from championship bouts that featured wrestlers from central Iowa. 

Class 3A Finals

  • 106 lbs. - Nico DeSalvo (Southeast Polk)  
  • 113 lbs. - Tyler Harper (Norwalk)
  • 120 lbs. - Carter Pearson (Southeast Polk)
  • 126 lbs. - Timothy Koester (Bettendorf)
  • 138 lbs. - Koy Davidson (Fort Dodge)
  • 144 lbs. - Kane Naaktgeboren (Linn-Mar)
  • 150 lbs. - Bas Diaz (Waverly-Shell Rock)
  • 157 lbs. - Kael Voinovich (City High)
  • 165 lbs. - Jacob Helgeson (Johnston)
  • 175 lbs. - Damarion Ross (Fort Dodge)
  • 190 lbs. - Brent Slade (Southeast Polk)
  • 215 lbs. - Dreshaun Ross (Fort Dodge)
  • 285 lbs. - Daniel Herrera (Ames)

Class 2A Finals

  • 113 lbs. - Brayden Bohnsack (Union)
  • 120 lbs. - Gage Spurgeon (Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont)
  • 126 lbs. - Carson Doolittle (Webster City)
  • 132 lbs. - Kade Blume (Roland-Story)
  • 165 lbs. - Colin Young (Dubuque Wahlert)
  • 175 lbs. - Austin Scranton (Anamosa)
  • 190 lbs. - Jarrett Roos (Sheldon/South O'Brien)

Class 1A Finals

  • 165 lbs. - Maddox Nelson (Underwood)
  • 215 lbs. - Ashton Honnold (Nodaway Valley)
