Ankeny police identify driver who died after crashing into home Saturday

Ankeny police and fire departments responded to a call of a car crashing into a home on NW 32nd Street at approximately 1:40 a.m. Saturday.

ANKENY, Iowa — One person is dead after crashing a car into an Ankeny home, according to police

Ankeny police and fire departments responded to a call of a car crashing into a home on NW 32nd Street at approximately 1:40 a.m. Saturday.

When they arrived, first responders found the car in the basement of the house, which was fully engulfed in flames. 

The driver of the car, 21-year-old James Shafer II, was unable to exit the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe Shafer was the only person in the car. 

The residents of the house escaped safely. 

The incident is currently under investigation by Ankeny police in conjunction with the Ankeny Fire Department.
