DES MOINES, Iowa — A bicyclist is dead after being struck by a car on Wednesday afternoon, Des Moines police said in a press release.

Officers responded to a report of a crash involving a car and a bike on SE 6th Street and Pioneer Road shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday.

When they arrived, first responders found the bicyclist, 40-year-old Des Moines resident De'Wayne Lee Cole, with serious injuries.

Cole was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Evidence and witness statements indicate that Cole was riding his bike west on Pioneer Road when he failed to yield at a stop sign and entered the northbound lane of SE 6th Street, where he was struck by a pickup truck, according to police.

This is Des Moines' sixth traffic-related fatality of 2023, and the first involving a bicyclist
