Airlines waive flight change fees ahead of Iowa's winter weather

Airlines such as American, Delta, United and Southwest are allowing passengers to change their holiday travel plans free of cost due to imminent winter weather.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Several airlines that fly out of and into the Des Moines International Airport have issued travel fee waivers as Iowa and other midwestern states brace for extreme winter weather and hindered holiday travel.

Iowa will be bombarded with snow, wind and possibly blizzard-like conditions from Wednesday through Friday.

Here's what some of DSM International's airlines are offering for impacted Midwest travelers:

American Airlines

Your change fee is waived if you:

  • Are booked in any fare class, including Basic Economy
  • Bought your ticket by Dec. 19, 2022
  • Are scheduled to travel Dec. 21-23, 2022
  • Can travel Dec. 19-30, 2022
  • Don't change your origin or destination city
  • Rebook in the same cabin or pay the difference

Flight changes must be:

  • Booked by Friday, Dec. 23
  • Completed within one year of original ticket date (a difference in fare may apply)

If you can't find your flight information online or on the app, you can contact reservations for help.

American Airlines also has travel alerts out for winter weather in the Northeastern United States.

United Airlines

Your change fee is waived if you:

  • Purchased your ticket by Dec. 17
  • Were originally scheduled to travel Dec. 21-25, 2022
  • Will travel on or before Friday, Dec. 30
  • Don't change your origin or destination city
  • Rebook in the same cabin or pay the difference

Flight changes must be:

  • Booked by Friday, Dec. 30

There are similar offers available for those traveling in Texas, the East Coast and the Central and Northwest United States.

Southwest Airlines

Your change fee is waived if you:

  • Were originally scheduled to travel Dec. 21-26, 2022
  • Don't change your origin or destination city
  • Rebook in the same cabin or travel standby

Flight changes must be:

  • Booked within 14 days of your original travel dates

Delta Airlines

Delta has advisories out for the Midwest, Pacific Northwest winter weather, Northwest Mountain region winter weather and Atlantic and Northeast region severe weather.

Impacted travel dates are Dec. 21 through 25.

Your ticket must be reissued on or before Wednesday, Dec. 28. That is also the last day rebooked travel can begin.

Frontier and Allegiant have not issued any travel change fee waivers for the Midwest as of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Allegiant does not have any current winter weather or severe weather advisories active.

Frontier has not announced that any fee waivers are in effect, but the airline's alert page does say that "Flexible travel policies cannot be applied to changes and cancellations made on FlyFrontier.com or the Frontier mobile app at this time."

So, if you're flying out of Des Moines on those airlines over the next few days, a call to their customer help desk might be in order.
