Here's how much snow fell overnight in central Iowa

Accumulating snow is always possible in the spring, but it typically melts away quickly.

DES MOINES, Iowa — EDITOR'S NOTE: The video above originally aired during "Good Morning Iowa" on Thursday, March 31

Receiving spring snow in Iowa isn't unusual, but accumulating snow at the end of March is normally regarded as an unwanted sight.

Still, March averages 4.4" of snow each year in Des Moines. However, March 2022 was above-average for snow.

A total of 8.6" of snow fell at the airport in Des Moines in March, 4.2" above average.

For the entire season, Des Moines recorded 34.4" of snow at the airport.

The average through March 31st is 35.0", so a deficit of only 0.6" of snow means it's safe to call it an average season.

The big question: Is this the final snow for Des Moines in the 2021-22 winter season?

History would say no. The average final measurable snow in the city is April 2.

In the last four winters, the final measurable snow occurred at some point during the month of April.
