Iowa unemployment update: Initial and continuing claims both drop, $17M paid out in benefits

837,000 Americans sought unemployment benefits last week.

5,018 initial unemployment claims were filed last week in Iowa, a decrease of 1,099 (17.97%) from the previous week.

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits declined last week to a still-high 837,000, evidence that the economy is struggling to sustain a tentative recovery that began this summer.

4,452 initial claims for the week of Sept. 20-26 were by people who work and live in Iowa, while 566 by individuals who work in Iowa but live outside the state.

$17,085,937.61 in unemployment insurance benefits were paid out last week.

Continuing claims for the week were 58,744, a decrease of 4,194 (6.66%) from the previous week.

The following industries had the most claims, according to IWD:

  • Manufacturing (1,105)
  • Industry Not Available - Self-employed, Independent Contractors, etc (808)
  • Health Care & Social Assistance (464)
  • Construction (396)
  • Accommodation & Food Services (323)

Additional data released for last week:

  • $3,586,200 in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) paid during, which were retroactive payments as the program ended July 25, 2020. Since April 4, 2020, $1,607,968,543 in FPUC benefits has been paid.
  • $4,177,924 paid in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits
  • $6,090,772.72 paid in Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) benefits. Since May 27, 2020, a total of $78,654,470.04 in PEUC benefits have been paid. 
  • $1,106,235.45 in State Extended Benefits paid. Since July 21, 2020, a total of $8,692,690.77 in Extended Benefits have been paid.
