Suspect arrested in deadly hit-and-run crash, Des Moines police say

Police believe the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A man is in custody following a deadly hit-and-run crash Friday night, Des Moines police said in a press release.

Officers responded to the 3900 block of 12th Street around 11:50 p.m. Friday to investigate a report of a car striking a pedestrian and a house. 

When they arrived, first responders 47-year-old Parreh Ngar of Des Moines in the road with critical injuries. Ngar was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. 

Police later arrested 52-year-old Lwin Myint of Des Moines. Myint is charged with Homicide by Vehicle - Operating While Intoxicated. 

Police say evidence at the scene indicates Myint hit Ngar with his car, a 2003 Honda Accord, before leaving the road and striking a house on the east side of the street. DMPD believes Myint was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. 

Myint will be held at Polk County Jail. 

This is Des Moines' seventh fatality crash of 2024, and its first involving a pedestrian.
