DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police have arrested a suspect in connection to a March crash that killed a motorcyclist.

Police say 35-year-old Kristofer Lee Zech is charged with the following:

  • Homicide by Vehicle - OWI
  • Failure to Yield Upon Left Turn

Evidence indicates Zech was attempting a left turn from eastbound E. Grand Avenue to northbound E. 13th Street when he failed to yield and collided with an oncoming motorcyclist, 22-year-old Spencer Rush of Des Moines, in the intersection.

Rush was pronounced dead at the scene. His death marked Des Moines' third traffic-related fatality crash of 2024, and the second involving a motorcycle.

Police believe Zech was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Zech is currently being held at the Polk County Jail.
