DES MOINES, Iowa — A girl seriously injured in a crash in late September east of Des Moines has now passed away.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office received calls reporting the accident at NE 108th St. and Highway 163 the evening of Saturday, Sept. 24. The crash caused a portion of University Avenue to be temporarily shut down.

The sheriff's office said the investigation so far shows two vehicles hit each other head-on. One was driven by a man and had two children as passengers. The second vehicle only had a male driver.

Bystanders performed CPR on one of the children, a 10-year-old girl until medics arrived.

The driver of that vehicle had his leg partially severed in the accident. He and the two children were all taken to the hospital.

On Saturday, Oct. 8, the girl passed away from the injuries she sustained in the crash. Her name is not being released.

The accident is still being investigated by the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
