One person is dead following an afternoon crash Sunday, Des Moines police said in a press release.

Officers responded to a report of a crash involving a motorcycle at the intersection of E. 16th Street and E. University Avenue at approximately 2:10 p.m. Sunday.

When they arrived, first responders found 41-year-old Mitchell Ohland of Des Moines with "critical injuries". Medics transported him to a local hospital, where he later died. Ohland was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene, police believe a 61-year-old woman was driving west on E. University Avenue when she attempted to turn left on to E. 16th Street.

Ohland, who was traveling east on E. University Avenue, crashed into the passenger side of the car. Police added a failure to yield and excessive speed may have contributed to the crash,

"No charges have been filed or citations issued at this point in the investigation," the department said in a press release.

This is Des Moines' fourth traffic-related death this year, and the third involving a motorcycle.
