Southwestern Community College says 3rd student has died 10 days after late-night crash near Afton, Iowa

According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, a sedan carrying four passengers ran through a stop sign near Afton, Iowa, on Friday, July 21.

AFTON, Iowa — Three Southwestern Community College students have died following a late-night collision on Friday, July 21. 

According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, a sedan carrying four passengers ran through a stop sign near 190th Street and Highway 34 in Afton, Iowa, around 10:30 p.m. 

A truck hit the sedan on the driver's side, sending both vehicles into the ditch. One of the sedan passengers was pronounced dead on the scene, and the other three were taken to area hospitals in critical condition. The truck's two occupants were also injured and taken to nearby hospitals. 

Two 19-year-olds in the sedan, Halsie Barnes and Ella Leonard, died the night of the crash. The sedan driver, 19-year-old Madalynn Stewart, died later from her injuries.

No one in the sedan was wearing a seatbelts. The passenger in the truck was. 

SWCC held a candlelight service remembering Barnes and Leonard on Tuesday, July 25. Campus will be closed on Wednesday, Aug. 2, so that everyone can  attend Leonard's funeral. 

SWCC women's basketball tweeted about Stewart on Monday: 

"It’s with extreme sadness we announce a true angel on earth, Madalynn Mae Stewart, was called home. Maddie was smart, sweet, talented & overall an amazing young lady. She will be missed very deeply. Please keep Maddies family & friends in your prayers. We love you “MadDawg”."
