2023 year in review: Local sports

From girls state wrestling to Caitlin Clark and an Iowa-Iowa States sports gambling investigation, there was a lot to talk about in 2023.

ISU went on to beat Texas, their first of three top-10 wins at home in three weeks.

Former Norwalk star Bowen Born extended a game against Drake not once, but twice. But the Bulldogs got the last laugh in double overtime.

History was made as the first-ever Iowa High School Girls Wrestling Tournament was held and Katie Biscoglia became the first-ever state champion.

Eight central Iowa boys won state titles to.

ESPN's "College GameDay" came to Carver-Hawkeye Arena and witnessed Caitlin Clark Magic.

The Iowa women won their second Big Ten title in a row, Iowa State won the Big 12 and Drake won the Missouri Valley.

The Drake men won their first conference title since 2008 led by the group of fifth-year seniors who came back to do just that.

In the midst of college hoops, Audi Crooks scored 49 points leading Bishop Garrigan to a Class 1A state title. Dallas Center-Grimes won their first-ever title as well.

Waukee Northwest won the Battle of Waukee in the Class 4A semifinals, but Valley's championship came ahead of schedule led by four sophomores.

No. 22 from Dowling Catholic became the biggest star in March, leading Iowa to their first Final Four in 30 years. Then the team beat Goliath, undefeated South Carolina. Their run ended in the National Championship Game against LSU, but the Hawkeyes received a warm welcome home back in Iowa City.

State track saw 62 winners — yes, 62 — from central Iowa.

Boomer Caia took the Cyclone women's tennis team to their first-ever Sweet 16 and beat UCLA.

Ankeny Centennial won their first softball state championship and Winterset won another.

In Iowa City, it took a comeback, but Johnston walked off to win their third title in  four years.

Local 5 had another successful season of "Friday Night Blitz"as Van Meter and Southeast Polk both completed three-peats.

Ankeny Christian went back-to-back and Waukee Northwest won their first in five sets.

Despite a sports gambling investigation into athletes at Iowa and Iowa State, the Cy-Hawk football game was still played. The trophy went back to the Hawkeyes.

Iowa State football hit rock bottom during a loss at Ohio, but found a groove in Big 12 play. They rocked the Jack Trice throwback uniforms against TCU and Abu Sama broke out in Snow-mageddon.

Drake went undefeated in Pioneer Football League play and played in their first-ever FCS Playoffs.

Iowa's new-look offense never reached full form as Cade McNamara — and the offense as a whole — deal with injuries. 

Kinnick Stadium went from dead silence to erupting roars for Cooper DeJean. And then there was the punt return touchdown that never was.

After the Minnesota game, Interim Director of Athletics Beth Goetz announced that OC Brian Ferentz would not return in 2024. The Hawkeyes rallied to win out and make the Big Ten Championship Game where they lost to Michigan.

Iowa-Iowa State basketball split in Ames: the men dominated while Caitlin Clark hit the 3,000-point milestone, picking up her first win in Hilton.
